View Full Version : If Dr. Fate and Dr. Strange Were to Battle Who Would Win?
Just a curious question I've been wondering about. Both claim to be the ultimate sorcerors of their respective universes but what would happen if they had a magic battle? Skill vs Skill plus all the extra trappings (Eye of Agamoto, Fate's helmet, Nabu etc.). Let the debate begin! Oh and one other thing the Amalgam known as Dr. Strange-Fate does not count, sorry.
Have fun :)

I know who they are but not very much about their powers / level of power. I rememeber that Dr. Strange was appointed by some higher being to be last defense against worldly threats, along with 3 other individuals. The Hulk was one of them, the other 2 I do not remember.

As was Dr. Fate, by the forces of Order to oppose Chaos.
This is one of the few fights there's just no way to judge. They're both essentially the same character, powerwise. For every item one has, the other has something just as odd and powerful. Both of them have incredibly nebulous and uncertain powers, I.e., whatever magic spell they happen to get written with. This one's a draw.

The Defenders were Dr. Strange, Hulk, Namor and Silver Surfer joined them from time to time. They were the self-appointed defenders of the Earth from supernatural threats. Dr. Strange himself gained the title of Sorceror Supreme of Earth after years of training and was eventually appointed to the rank. Just to clear that up.
But yes, Strange and Fate are essentially the same character. Magic is messy like that. There's no way to know beforehand what spells they would come up with.

Well they just wouldn't fight.
They'd gang up on whomever was trying to get them to fight one another after convincing them that one, or the other, was victorious.
No really.

Obviously it's just Dormamu trying to get a hold of their collection of Hostess Fruit Pies.

Nah. It wouldn't be Dormammu. I know Dormammu, and he wouldn't do a thing like that.
Now Shuma-Gorath, on the other hand.... :D

Maybe it's Agamento? I mean I'd be pretty pissed if I knew some feeble mortal Sorcerror Supreme was running around with my eye and god knows what else. Not to mention two asian occultist a-holes in L.A. just used my spin to get Arnold elected as governor.

If we're going off of the current incarnations of the characters, then Strange would win, only due to experience (Hector pretty much said 'Screw you, Nabu.' and has to start back at square one and re-learn pretty much all his spells since Nabu isn't telling him what to do now).
Otherwise, it'd be very, very, VERY close, but I would give the slight edge to Fate since Strange would basically fighting two sorcerers (Nabu/Whoever would be Fate at the time)

You forgot one member of the Defenders.
The Valkyrie, Brunhilde, was a Defender. In fact Cryptic somehow got liberty to use that name for their hero. :grr:
As for this match-up, I'm biased cause they're both on my top ten list.
In fact, as Metamorpho is my favorite DC hero, Doc Strange was my all-time Marvel hero. :) Also there was a Marvel quiz some time ago online that I took to see which hero you'd be. Turns out, I was Doc Strange.

Funny almost unrelated Dr. Strange info:
Question: "Think you'd enjoy writing Dr. Strange, mr. Ellis?"
Warren Ellis: "Been there, done that, had to quit after one issue because the editor's boss was complaining about the lack of fightscenes and, I swear to god, "all this magic stuff." "
And a Valkyrie is a mythological creature, therefor Marvel has no claims for it legal. Of couse so was Grendel and he was renamed Atta anyway, so I dunno.

If you check your Exploration badges and story arcs, I believe the story is that Atta killed Grendel for control of the Trolls. And they fought back and forth through Eastgate (The Hollows) until the deciding blow was struck, and the thunderclap of that deathblow was so great that it created Grendel's Gulch. Either that or the battle itself gradually battered the Gulch out of the earth and the surrounding city; The end of the story's not all that clear.
Yes, I know...it's odd that the landmark was named after the one who got whupped instead of the one who did the whuppin', but still....

Valkyrie joined later, yeah. The Defenders roster changed a lot. At one point it was basically, "Ice Man, Beast and Friends."

Fate gets his ass handed to him CONSTANTLY, that's when he's not whining about Nabu or his wife, or the weather, or how some punk guy ripped him off. Bah...I like Fate but he's whining would be no match for someone like Dr Strange.

That's because Dr. Fate can manage to warrant showing up in a book on a regular basis. Now the Stephen has his own book again, expect the ass-handing to return to equal rates.

So are we talking about the Classic Fate, the Inza Nelson Fate, the New Blood (?) Fate or the more recent Reincarnated-guy-ina-helmet Fate?

I assume then most recent one.

Well, I tend to like OLD Fate the best (Kent Nelson) and I tend to think in terms of that, although the reigns of the title have changed MANY times recently (too many).
I know Hector Hall is the new Fate and there is a bit of family justice and all, but I say leave that to the old Infinity, Inc.! I was used to his wife being dead and Hector being in the looney bin (or dead) and now he is back and SO is his wife?? (Although, last I read they found his wife in a coma somewheres disguised by a spell).
Hector is better than say, a stranger off the street, but yeah, he really bothers me. Probably his whinyness.
And yes, this is unfortunately about Hector Hall-Fate vs. Stephen Strange-Doc. :/

(Whatever happened to that kid in the Book of Magic? He was touted all-out and now you hear nothing about him no more.)

In that case Strange wins.
Kent Nelson-Fate and Strange were/are equals in every sense.
Inza Nelson-Fate would have whupped Strange and then convinced him to be a bit more proactive in saving the world.

He's in a new book isn't he, all grown up even (as in College age, me thinks)? Called "Life during Wartime" or something.
Actually you guys are thinking of Tim Hunter. He was part of the Books of Magic.
One more thing the current Dr. Fate is not bound by order and chaos like his predicessors. If anyone has the mini series from a year ago he's not that whiney in it.
I kind of think of Fate and Strange to be on somewhat equal footing though Fate may have an edge with being able to call up Kent, Inza and Nabu. Plus the spell library that has every spell ever written.
Continue the discussion :)

Heh heh Okay Dr.Fate & Doc Strange have at it. Then without warning the others come in. LOL
A battle between Edgar Winters & the Phantom Stranger would be interesting.
