BACKGROUND: Born in King's Row, Abigail was the baby of a poor family of six. Hers was a world of hand-me-downs and little luxury, but she had the wealth of a sweet disposition from early childhood. Her most favorite moments in early life were those spent nestled amidst the children's collection in King's Row Memorial Library, where fairy stories and tales of magical adventures wholly consumed her imagination. Of her siblings she was always closest to Roger. Though she only began to know him after his return from the sanitarium, his kindness lead them to form a strong bond quickly.
Abigail loved to sing, and spent many a lazy hour composing some new tune as it suited her. It was in one such moment, at age eight, that she noticed a strange shift in the breeze as she sang. When she adjusted her improv lyrics, the breeze returned to its natural course. Precocious and intelligent, she tested many patterns of song, discovering to her surprise that she could somewhat intuitively direct the wind at her leisure. She could not ever remember having had such an effect before.
For a few happy moments, she took full advantage of the newfound might, causing the breeze to caress her carefree form and blow her long hair about her face. It quickly occurred to her, however, that no one else she knew had ever talked about anything like this. She worried she might be turning schizophrenic, like they had suspected of her poor brother. Abigail did not want to go the sanitarium, and determined to stop making the breeze move and to tell no one.
Abby was an early bloomer at age twelve, when she had not quite abandoned fairy stories and fanciful dreaming. Suddenly it seemed as though everyone expected her to act like a young lady and not a little girl. Some of the 16 year old boys on her block began treating her strangely, and although she appreciated the attention at first, their intentions soon became clear and frightening to her. She had always fantasized about studying magic like the characters in books could do, but now, retreating into herself, she began actively fancying it a reality.
Almost as a game, she began looking for magical things in everyday life. Seeing any old fellow, she told herself stories about how he might be a secret wizard, who locked himself away in a secret study at night, researching spells and incantations. It was this odd tendency that lead Abigail to notice particularly when a family friend named Justin Ignatius, who had come over to their house in King's Row, mysteriously and subtly changed the pattern on his tie when he thought no one was looking.
Jokingly, she confronted the middle-aged gentlemen about his sloppiness, and told him that if he was going to teach her magic, he'd have to be better about it than that. To her surprise, he responded seriously, whispering that if he were to teach her magic, he'd be a great deal better about it than that. Ignatius asked her parents if she might study Latin under him, and offered the lessons for whatever the girl might be able to pay out of her babysitting wages. Not sure if she was dreaming, Abby went over to Ignatius house for her first Latin lesson.
The old man did, in fact teach her Latin, but he also taught her a great many other things: runes and relics and ancient mythologies. Abigail took to such study like a fish to water and quickly became an expert at hiding evidence of her magical research from her family and friends at school. Nevertheless, the secrets that were piling up began to wear on the maturing girl, and when she discovered at age 14 that Roger was leaving for the military, she broke down and told him everything. To her surprise, Roger didn't condemn her or think she was crazy. Instead, he told her a secret of his own, about his time in the sanitarium and the real reason he'd been released. The confidants took to writing each other frequently as she progressed through high school and into adulthood, all the while her magical acumen increasing.
Abigail loved magical history in particular, whether ancient or modern, and she devoured every book she could find on the subject. She aspired to someday become like the legendary Dream Doctor, whose courage and magical exploits helped win World War II and had led to the assembly of the greatest team of magical heroes in world history, the mysterious Midnight Squad. Though all its members were secret and largely untraceable, she determined to break into the group once her studies were complete.
Roger returned from extensive service in the military with considerable wealth. This came as a surprise to Abigail, as he had never hinted at it in his letters. With her brother back in Paragon, Abigail decided it might be safe to begin testing her spells on a small scale. With her mentor's help, she found she could affect the minds of small animals quite effectly without harming them.
Enthusiastic, she tried her spells on a couple of street thugs in King's Row who were making a drug trade. Though they fought back both mentally and physically, the bruised woman returned from the encounter victorious and exhilarated. In addition, she began composing more elaborate songs that could exert control over the wind on a greater scale. She determined that air pressure itself might be made to respond to her whims.
Roger had gone to University, and Abigail wanted to make her parents proud in the same way that he had done. Fortunately, Ignatius had connections with many humanities Professors at Oxford University in England and she secured a full scholarship to study Ancient History there. While in England, Abigail was able to visit and interact with many of the key academics in the magical field, through which contacts she excitedly discovered that Justin Ignatius himself was a member of the Midnight Squad! He reluctantly admitted to the truth of it.
It was also about this time that tragic events took place in Paragon City. The Rikti Invasion took a great personal toll on Abigail. Her mother and older sister were killed when an alien ship landed on their home, and her father was shortly after crippled by a fall out between super-powered heroes and the invading aliens.
Prepared to immediately come home to use what magic she had to stop the Rikti, she was halted by Roger and Alex (her father), who forbid her return save for the funeral of her mother and sister. Obedient but furious, Abigail gleaned what news she could and diverted her pent up energy into singing and theater on top of her magical and historical studies.
She pressed Ignatius to know why he was not himself out with the other heroes. He explained that magical academes were important and needed, so that key information might survive and continue to be passed down. Hotblooded Abigail was not satisfied and urged him get out of intellectual conversations and into the streets, where real people needed real help. Knowing that her studies with him were nearly complete, she began making plans for her own entrance into the world of heroes.
Returning to Paragon after receiving her degree from Oxford, she was dismayed to discover that the most active members of the Midnight Squad, save a few, had been killed or gone into hiding during the Rikti Invasion. What was left was the ever-increasing power of the once-tamed Circle of Thorns, and what she perceived to be a bunch of old men fearfully hiding their relics. She immediately registered with Hero Corps. as a magic user under the name of the Lightningale, and determined to find some way to bring the ambitious and energetic blood of new magical heroes into a concerted force. After meeting a like-minded mystic named Rejuvenate, and finally convincing her old mentor to aid her in the effort, she founded the Midnight Avengers as a tribute to all those courageous mages who gave their lives to stop the invasion.
