View Full Version : Any interest in a pulp-influenced SG?

Because I'm forming one called the Barnstormers. (http://virtueverse.com/index.php/Category:Barnstormers)

So, I'll spare any SG rambling, trust you to check out the Virtueverse page, and then discuss if anyone would be interested in something like it.

I'm assuming it's villainside since The Grave Bell is a villain?

Also, this made me wonder whatever happened to the Midnight Society?

EDIT: I see you re-rolled him. My mistake.

Gaia

The Midnight Society name is held by me over on Guardian where it was for awhile then everyone went away. I still have Nick Steele and 'Redd over there. Someone took the name over on Virtue, a player we had initially recruited. They have since refused to give the name back to either myself or a couple of the other original members still floating around the server.

And I would be interested of course. PM me if you want me on here or not. What side is it to to be played out on Red or Blue?

I was considering a coat and fedora wearing, tommygun-tooting, film noir, Humphrey Bogart-esque hero anyway once weapon customisation is here. We'll see how that turns out.

The forum should be going up sometime today...

If only they had suspenders under belt options.

I do have a sudden idea for a The Magician like idea. Or a Doc Sampson.

PW that would be Doc Savage: Man of Bronze one of the longest running pulp series. :) There are some newer books by Spider Robinson available besides the classic used books (pick them up at the shops for between $8 to $20. I have a few of the 1960's hard bounds :) )

My latest obsession in the genre is The Avenger: Justice Inc. and G-8 (on the verge of impossible to find)

Here he is:

You thinking of Sgt. Rock?

Not sure, but would a speedster cowboy from WW2 era work, is that not pulp enough? Or I could ressurect the original Swan from the same old team if that's more along the lines.

There is one rule in pulp. NO spandex costumes. The closest you would come to that would be a wrestler (actual trained wrestler not WWF/WWE style) or a boxer in his shorts and boots.

Masked Revenger
10-08-2007, 04:09 AM
If I had the boxing costume options, I was so going to do a character called the Shadow Boxer that was a generational hero. His grandfather would have been the original Shadow Boxer, from the '30's, and would totally fit into this group.

Otherwise, I have no open slots at the moment.

Ah, then nevermind about Adventurer. Oh well...

Gaia

Cloud you can still do the adventurer. The Shadow, The Spider, The Phantom (contrary to popular belief DID NOT wear spandex but more of a long johns outfit and a hood with a mask.), Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, John Carter. Those are adventurers. So is Indiana Jones in the modern sense. Frank Buck (based on an actual person!) would be a big game hunter type--if anyone remembers the old Bring'em Back Alive tv show. A good modern pulp version of the pulp pilot was the show Tales of the Gold Monkey.

So would my Coyote Storm character fall into that category? He is a Native American warrior that uses the power of weather and a bow to fight crime.

Or Federal? Federal relies on his inventions for his powers. Gloves, boots and helmet. He is socially inept but a genius. The art makes him look younger than he is though.

I think I will be devoting my Archery/Electricity blaster to this, Time Flux.

Inventor: Brilliant, bumbling, two-fisted, or mad creator of gadgetry and super-science marvels.

Time Flux is just a kid, an inventor from the future whose miscalculations and eagerness landed him a life out-of-sync with time and space. Lost from his own time and drawn to strong dimensional activity in ours, Time Flux comes and goes whether he wants to or not, sometimes disappearing for hours on end and returning with affects from different time periods. Noble and brave, but unreliable, Time Flux can make a good situation better, worse, or hilarious as he sometimes skips around in time.

Thanks for the fantastic response. This is just a very brief reply that will have to do until later this evening.

With the forums, use whatever you'd like. They are likely a temporary stop gap.

And Grae, Coyote Storm strikes me as a very pulpish character, actually.

Charon

The Phantom (contrary to popular belief DID NOT wear spandex but more of a long johns outfit and a hood with a mask.)
The material doesn't particularly matter. He still wore what we recognise as the first 'superhero' outfit of today. It has all the characteristics of later superhero costumes: skin tight, brightly colored, domino mask and underwear-on-the-outside. Long johns or not, The Phantom is one of the few that breaks the 'no spandex on pulp heroes' rule and if I was going to make a pulp character I would probably base it on him. That or a 1930s gangster. I do love me some tommy gun.

I think I may pitch in with this and see how it goes. I'm not a huge RPer, per se, but I can at least speak in-character. My initial idea is based on another idea I posted many moons ago. I am going to re-imagine Dynamo-Man as a pulp hero. Get ready for Dynamo Joe!

Question reguarding applications. I have an idea for a character to apply with, but it is DB/WP so unable to currently be rolled. Should I wait until I11 to apply?

Dynamo-Man
10-18-2007, 03:44 AM
Ok, I ditched the idea of Dynamo Joe. I just wasn't feelin' it. So, now I am vacillating between these two:

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r121/TDoolan005/SmokinAce.jpg
Dark/Dark Scrapper - No background yet.

or

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r121/TDoolan005/MajorFlagg.jpg
Inv/SS Tanker - Leader of The Fighting Five, a multi-national commando unit in WWII.

I'd like some opinions, please. :)

Gaia
10-18-2007, 03:48 AM
I like the pilot. But then I'm biased since I have stacks of Cpt. Thunder stories still unseen from my time with the Midnight Society. Along with Adam Venture being an ex-daredevil barnstormer pilot. :)

Grae Knight

Have to say both are quite good Dynamo. Either would be great.

Dynamo-Man
10-18-2007, 02:23 PM
Well, from a metagaming standpoint, the Barnstormers are Scrapper-heavy. Plus, there is at least one guy who looks a lot like Ace. So, I am probably going go with the Major. Besides, I already have a background for him (he's a recreation from a character on another server).

Although I really like the way Ace turned out, so don't be surprised if you see him floating around Paragon City every once in a while.

Masked Revenger
10-18-2007, 02:27 PM
Oh, man, you KNOW I love the Major. I still have my member of the Fightin' Five over on Victory. So, I say go for him.

But, Ace did turn out really cool.

Only thing with Flagg, don't you already have a Inv/SS tanker? Maybe go with Mace or Axe for him and then customize the weapon later? Could make his resilant nature be derived from the magical hammer. Or even hold out for will power. Just spit balling here.

I thought of that. I'm going to go with Inv for now, but probably re-roll him as WP when I11 comes out. That one just sounds cool. I'm also going to be very selective on his SS attacks. Basically, no "overhead" attacks, so his fighting style will look more "brawley" so to speak. :) I might even take the Fighting set. I'm not sure yet.

And the Major is till sitting over on Victory too. :D

I've been wracking my brain to come up with a good pulp character, and this is what I've got:

http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/4466/thefedlp9.jpg

The Fed
Technology AR/Devices Blaster
(intended for use with Tommy Gun when available in Issue 11)

Unfortunately, I just don't want to start levelling up a second AR/Dev blaster.
:(

Gaia
10-19-2007, 12:48 AM
Slap a gas mask on him. Keep the AR and pair it off with energy or ice just to be different. Say he was in a cryo freezer after his arch-nemesis dumped him in there to die or something.

Nerfed
10-19-2007, 12:54 AM
Honestly, I don't much care for blaster secondaries other than energy. Electricity is alright, and devices I tolerate but tend to use as few powers from it as I can get away with.

Anyhow, I think I'll leave the name Fed out there for someone else to have fun with.

Nerfed

Okay, here's my submission for the Barnstormers:

http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/2664/screenshot2007101820075vk4.jpg

Electro-Cute
Science Electric/Electric Blaster
Jazz singer & daughter of government super scientist, she
gained electrical powers in a matter-energy transporter
accident while investigating her father's disappearance.
The process held her in stasis for close to 60 years before
she was awakened by Paragon City's finest scientific minds
at S.E.R.A.P.H.

Captain McAce!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/Vendel/McAce.jpg

He is a PB.
Background. He is a crack fighter pilot shot down over the Jungles of south America. There he met a tribe of natives who took him in and nursed him back to health. Long story short they made him there champion and infused him with great powers (hence the PB powers)....the rest is history (aka a work in progress)

So here's my contribution:
http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/386/vickorykt7.png

His name is William Vickory (though just Vickory in-game). What I've got going for him right now is sort of a washed out wealthy monopoly-man who awoke, unfortunately with no memory for the previous week, with semi-developed magical abilities. His story is about finding out why and how he has the powers and who gave them to him, while trying not to lose everything he has in the process.

I had to go with a Dark/Dark Defender because I've been wanting to try one for a while. :D

The answer is: modern day. Many will be from earlier periods but have found themselves in the present one way or another, so have to bridge the gap in time somehow. However, this isn't a necessary theme... you can create a modern character within the pulp genre.
