A guy did the entire LotR movie trilogy like this, and played the part of the DM with a few stereotypical PC's. It's a great campaign but you do stop a few times and go "Yeah, been there."

One of the funniest episodes is here (http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=718)...not so much because of the strip but because of the Comments section that follows. The Comments sections on this site use little pictures of various D&D dice to render the comment count and comment numbers, so for some odd reason the commenters decided to "break the dice" and see what happens to the dice if they get the number of comments into triple digits.
I imagine it leads to 20-siders galore. And it looks like they're still working on it. :D
