Does anyone know what kind of a message board the old CoH boards were. That allowed the influence?

Yes it was. "Hack" doesn't mean it's bad, just messing with files.

The old boards ran on vbulletin, just like these ones. However, these boards run on a newer version, hence this crazy uber-enhanced features. Vbulletin is GREAT, the best as far as online forums go, but unweildly expensive to buy. $160 up front, per website, last I checked (which was two years ago, mind you). Definately worth the buy, but only if you plan to have the forums used as effectively as CoHGuru does now. Definately more on the professional side of forums.

Forums also use modifications (known as hacks) that upgrade or give new features to the forums. Originally, the forums had installed the Shop Hack, and the Quick Reply Hack, as well as several mini-hacks implemented into the Shop Hack. Hacks are generally supported by the forum creator (i.e. the good people at Vbulletin don't mind and actually encourage the development of these hacks) but don't provide technical help with them (as they did not actually create them)
I believe these hacks can be found at www.vbulletinhacks.com but I could be wrong (It's been two years since I got into this stuff) Just google Vbulletin Hacks, and it's bound to be one of the top sites.

On the cheaper side of things is phpBB forums. Completely free, roughly the same features as Vbulletin, tons more skins out there.. and all the things Vbulletin can do that it can't, people have created hacks for. There's also invision, which are ok, somewhat decent. ezboards, which suck, etc. etc.

I have tried phpbb before and had really good luck with it for a forum. I used to lead an Unreal Tournament 2003 clan and we used phpbb for our forum area. It was a busy site and it always worked well.

Well, can we get a shop hack or whateverand get the influence system back up, that's about the main thing I miss from the old days.
