E3 07: Hirai: 60GB PS3 'no longer in production'
SCEI CEO tells Norwegian television that Sony won't have a two-price strategy in the US market, SCEA says $499 model will be available "for months."

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--Today, the E3 Media & Business Summit wound down in Santa Monica, with at least one exhibitor having already packed up and left the show floor at Barker Hangar. However, this morning saw the biggest controversy of the show heat up, with a maelstrom of confusion surrounding the $499 price drop of the 60GB PS3, which was just announced Monday.

Last night, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO David Reeves told GameSpot that the discounting was merely a markdown of a model which had been discontinued. Just hours later, his statements appeared to be contradicted by a senior Sony Computer Entertainment America spokesperson, who said that quotes from Reeves in the press were "not accurate."

"As announced this week, SCEA's product offering in North America consists of an 80GB PS3 available in August at $599 and a 60GB PS3 available now for $499," SCEA senior director of corporate communications Dave Karraker told GameSpot. "We have will have ample supplies of both models to meet the needs of our consumers for the foreseeable future."

At almost the same time, a television interview with the global head of Sony Computer Entertainment settled the matter once and for all. Speaking to Norwegian game-news outlet VGTV, SCEI president and group CEO Kaz Hirai said in no uncertain terms that the 60GB PS3's days are numbered.

"From a hardware perspective, the $499 price adjustment we did for the 60GB version for the American market, we're no longer in production for that product," he said in an unedited on-camera interview. "Once that product is gone from the retailer shelves, then we're back to a $599 SKU only, so it's not like we have a two-price strategy in the US market. We found out very early on how consumers react to having just one SKU as opposed to two."

SCEA has subsequently confirmed the phase out, but emphasized that it would be gradual. "The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted," Karraker told GameSpot in a follow-up interview. "We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come."

Karraker also responded to criticism that loudly promoting the new $499 price point while quietly discontinuing its production amounted to a bait and switch. "This is absolutely not a bait and switch," he said. "We are offering a full featured PS3 for $100 lower than the original price and will do so for months to come, allowing consumers the opportunity to acquire this model at this adjusted price."

BAIT AND SWITCH! BAIT AND SWITCH! BAIT AND SWITCH! BAIT AND SWITCH! BAIT AND SWITCH! BAIT AND SWITCH! BAIT AND SWITCH! BAIT AND SWITCH! BAIT AND SWITCH! BAIT AND SWITCH! BAIT AND SWITCH! Their defense is that there are plenty of them. And why are there plenty, because Sony couldn't sell them at the old price so they made a new model, discontinued the old, and simply had a fire sale

Don't put the Saturn in with the PlayStation 3, if you know your stuff, the Saturn had great games, just none of them came out in America.

The correct answer is, the PS3 is this generation's 3DO.

Meh... I don't think I'd pay more than $100 for a PS3 with the weak as hell library it's got going right now... But Strangely enough, I might be getting one for just around that.

It's not really a "bait and switch", it's called a liquidation, they've stopped production of the 20gb and 60gb models, but believe me with the fact that nearly no one wants to spend 600 bucks on a console, there's still a ton left, so you can get your 60gb model for 500 without much worrying, unless you wait like a friggen year, but by then who knows maybe the newer 80gb model that ships with Motor Storm will drop it's price down 100 bucks.

Edit: As for it's "weak as hell library" -- the system is not even a year old yet, I'm sure the "wonderful" Xbox 360 with it's 3 rings of death didn't have a strong library in it's first 8 months of it's existance. Give it time, we've seen the future and it's looking quite bright:

I love my PS2 so much I bought a new one, when the old one went caput, but I can't imagine Sony's Mission Statement meeting concerning the PS3 going any different than "Okay, we have a lot of goodwill going for us due to having the best console around, how can we disregard everything good about our current model and exacerbate everything that wasn't so good about it?"

I don't complain about the Playstation because I hate it, I complain about it because I want to love it.

The only games I could care about in that list is MGS4. I'm done with Final Fantasy. I'm burned out with the first 12 and I love the first 12. when I saw 13, I just thought "Meh".

GTA4 is also coming to the XBOX360 with the collectors stuff, but even better, Microsoft paid Rockstar a large sum of money to make EXCLUSIVE Content upgrades and updates specifically for the 360 version, meaning the 360 will have more cars, more missions, and much much more.

MGS4 will go multiconsole or PC sooner or later. Its bound to happen after it comes out for PS3. SO I can wait. otherwise, the rest of those are crap.

I like the PS3 we have and I think eventually there will be tons of games but yeah this was a stupid thing to say on their part. They need the price cut to compete.

And the where does the Dreamcast come in, it was a great system that Sony assassinated.

I would buy it at $100 and there are at least 4 or so good games coming out as announced at E3, so get me 1 for like $100 and I'm set.

Yes. It bugs me that 99% of you who LOVE your PS2's are absolute Sony haters now. Well, I only want one game on that list you mentioned, maybe two. Infamous and maybe Little Big Planet, plus I am interest in Time Crisis 4 which didn't make your list. Still that hasn't yet convinced me to make the purchase yet..

While I can agree that the Xbox 360s library isn't great, it has the majority of the games I want as well as some of the ones that cross platform 360 and PS3. With 360 and Wii I have no need to purchase a PS3 yet, this does not mean I hate the system it means I don't think it's worth my money yet. The only reason I've even contemplated purchase of a PS3 is for Bluray, but even that hasn't convinced me yet.

Again, I don't hate the PS3, I just don't see the reason to have it yet for me. The games I want aren't even out, and there aren't enough of them to warrant purchase even if they were. As for Bluray, I have a 1080P capable HDTV, but I also don't feel the need to upgrade past DVDs just yet.

So yes, I do love my PS2.. I use it constantly to play Guitar Hero [original and soon 80s] and several other games. But I don't feel the love for one console with a huge library of games that I already have means I need to go out and buy the PS3.

I don't think anyone hates Sony, they just want them to make the PS3 worth the purchase.

While others like to spend their time judging those who they label as confused, basking in whatever glory one can get from the internet (which amounts for about a single pat on the back, the same adoration a kid gets when they crap in a toilet) by taunting said confused persons for whatever minor spelling mistake they may have created, when they could have spent that little bit of time doing somthing more constructive.

Dreamcast "died" because it came out and it was in the shadow of the PS2 and once people found out how easy it was to pirate games they killed that off quick. Dreamcast was still supported up to THIS YEAR. A few companies still use the Dreamcast arcade hardware (Naomi) to make arcade games on so porting them are VERY easy.

Here's the thing I love the most about KillZone 2 and Adam Sessler is the ONLY other person I have heard say this, Why is everybody excited about playing a game that flat out SUCKED the first time around? Sure it might look really good, hell that demo looked great. But to me that don't mean s_hit if it doesn't play well. I'd rather go back and play Unreal Tournament or Quake III if it turns out like garbage.

Nice to see somebody finally gets it. That's why I hate this generation of gamers and most new gamers in general. All they care about is new this, new that and graphics. It don't mean a damn thing if you can't play it.

It's all about the games. I don't care what type of system it is, unless you got good software to support the system, it's not going to make a bit of difference how powerful the stupid thing is.

Take the Saturn for example. The Saturn is a 2-D gaming powerhouse. There's games that can ONLY be done on the Sega Saturn. It might sound hard to believe, but it's the truth. Trust me, I looked into it. But what killed the Saturn in America was that NONE of the good games made it to America and the price was crazy.

Now that the system is dead, it's well worth getting into with the 4 Meg/Import Card that let's you play Japanese games. NiGHTS, Virtua Fighter 2, and if you can afford them, Guardian Heroes and Raident Silvergun are awesome games and need to be played!

the reason why I have a 360 and Wii is because I can cover most bases. If theres a game coming out thats good, I can get it and enjoy it. PC Covers PC games. 360 covers the high graphics and more power games, Wii covers the wiimote or lower end games. And I do plan on getting a wii-fit

And that's what still amazes me, that people take spelling and grammar corrections as personal attacks. O_o
Just a helpful bit of information, I'm not taunting you, and I'm not basking in any glory.

That said, I do agree with you, and I find it hilarious that Sony fanboys were like "Msft just got KILLZOWNED" after the conference. I was also laughing my ass off when they were like "This is actual ingame footage". Looked a lot different this time around, didn't it?

Its not a bait n switch, its a marketing sale. Basically they are creating hype, controversy, and massive increase in sales because now 'everyone' will rush out to get the cheeper unit while it still lasts. Rather intellegent really and could create the same market rush as the system release.

My two sense is they should release a $400 version to compete with 360 and release a bigger better $600 thats worth the price tag to run in parrallel with the attempted monopoly on next gen DvD technology. *shrug* I think Sony is a rather evil, we want to steal all your money corporation, more so than others so this doesn't surprise me. I never had a PS1 or PS2 and never will get the PS3, thus this goes in the 'meh' catagory. Least we will get some entertaining fan boy news reels out of this.
