the title of the thread says it all. i'm currently looking for a decent (preferrably free) RPG gaming system (that isn't GURPS) for a modern/near future fantasy setting (i'd say something like shadowrun but without the cybernetic stuff, but the actual magic system in shadowrun makes my hed hurt.
any ideas?

If you don't mind Math the hero 5th addition is rather a good game. Point based. Lots of supplement mods out there.

Spycraft 2.0 has a lot of neat rulesets, and is basically built for variance, but it ain't free.

hmmm... hero might not be too bad... one thing i liked as far as systems go was the white wolf stuff. after taking a look i might go with the streetfighter storytelling game system, just because of the manuvers and such...

Not free, but I really, really like the Savage Worlds (http://www.peginc.com/Games/Games.htm) game, by the same guys that make Deadlands.

White Wolf's Word of Darkness setting (new or old, take your pick, though I hear the new one has better rules), 'nuff said. Modern setting, certainly fantasy, and free if you find good torrents. :P
Naturally I can't recommend getting a torrent, but such things do exist...

heh, i decided to go with the old white wolf Street Fighter Storytelling game system, it allows me to do the things i want to do with a minimum of modifications needed (it's the combat system in "World of Darkness: Combat" aka the "Big Book of Beating Ass" the signup thread is the Devil may Cry PnP signup thread
