*sniff sniff*

I smells the familiar reek of a beancounter. They probably figure that they can squeeze an additional 1/95th of a cent profit per unit by sliding the release back a year. God, corporate thinking makes me steam sometimes. :(

Gah. But hopefully it'll be a better game for it. Unless it's like Sally says.

Wouldn't that be the case if they were pushing the games release date up to like... next Tuesday even though Will Wright & co aren't ready for it to be released? Pushing the game back won't be so bad, gives them more time to work on some finishing touches, etc.

I always felt that this game was a little too ambitious for its own development. Honestly, I'm not averse to waiting if it means finishing this monster. Besides, blaming corporate bean counters for forcing companies to release unfinished products is one thing, but blaming them for NOT releasing unfinished products is another (sillier) animal altogether.

Will Wright is a perfectionist. Give it time. Or, we crash the gate at his house in Red Wood, Cali.

I wonder if you could have said that without adding the "sillier". Was that necessary?

It's all about what amounts of profit can be expected Mike. If they think they can make more per unit by delaying, you can bet the house that they can and will. If the projections say wait... corporate entities will wait. Considering that this is EA were talking about here, I would not be surprised if that were the case.

Why would they think they can make more by delaying? They did not say. Maybe EA already had something big lined up for release that same year and does not want another EA title competing for the same consumers. Who knows?

Except that it is EA and not Will Wright announcing the delay. Why not crash EA's corporate HQ instead?

It's silly because it's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" type of scenerio based on unrealistic expectations and guesswork. Moving a release date isn't a big deal, there are a lot of reasons for doing it and heavy hitters like Will Wright tend to get their say in this kind of thing... Even from EA. If I had to guess (which is all any of us can do) I would say releasing earlier or on time would garner more money. As tempting as the "one-cause" fallacy is when it comes to corporate monsters like EA, more time to work on the product is always a good thing in the end. If they make more money, who cares? We get a more polished game.

Maybe someone at EA finally realized that beyond making funny-looking creatures with five legs and eight eyes, there's actually nothing to do in the game, so they brought it back for an overhaul?

That's the bad news? Whew, for a second there I thought the game had been shelved forever. I can wait another year for this game.

Maybe they pushed it back to be certain that there's technology widely available to support the game?

Because EA is big and has security guards. Will Wright is not big and has legal aged daughters.

What's the big deal about this game? The creature creator sounds fun for a while but i expect most people will be building oven and wooden furniture rooms before long.

That's a very good point. This would be especially true if the game was being made specifically for the Vista platform or DX10, say (or the promised capability of either/both of those).

And I'd have to agree with MikeKAY. Pushing a game's release date back is rarely good from a business perspective. The original release date was set because it was a known quantity (you KNEW what possible competing products would be around during that time). Pushing it back a year pretty much kills that point of view. It might have to be changed again, if a higher profile title is due to ship around the same time (no one wants to go head-to-head with WoW or an Elder Scrolls full game, for example). And as said, few people in the industry have the kind of clout that a Will Wright or Warren Spector have, as far as getting input into determining when a title is "ready". I'm fairly sure Will isn't pulling his hair out at the roots because he's been given more time (and, presumably, more resources) to add nice touches to the title overtly bearing his name.

I'd be more concerned about a rush to market moneygrab than a delay for polish, personally.

Im sure it will be even better once it comes out, but Im sooo sad right now...

I have. You seem to do even less in that part. Fly around, look at some species someone else has created, nuke them, move on.

I hadn't thought of that. With all the issues Vista has, a game that's in the works before and after Vista came out could potentially have loads of problems.

At least with this we know it won't be pulling a KOTOR2

Who's to say it wasn't knowingly in development for Vista, I mean they've been planning and making Vista for years.

Iunno, seems like it'd make sense for a corporate entity to make such a huge mistake as that. While they're all about making the money, they don't always know what they're doing with the logistics.

Any game can be simplified to that. All you do in CoH is run around, kill mob, level up, rinse repeat...

Well to be completely fair, evolution seems to have bypassed him all together.
