I thaught I'd make this thread because there seems to be a few Anime fans. So here it is! Use this thread to talk about your favorites, one's you hate, and what your watching now.

As if you couldn't tell by my character's name my favorite Anime is Sailor Moon. I've been a fan since I was 13 when it was shown on WPIX Channel 11 at 6:30 in the morning. It was one of the only things that made me happy going through Jr High School.

I have collected many Sailor Moon things, here is a picture of the shelf in my room. It's old and I don't have a few things in there, I also have a cel which I need to get framed. So here it is, my "Usagi Shelf!" (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v98/Yuckmud/SMShelf.jpg)

So please tell me what other Anime's your into. And if you will be going to Otakon this year please let me know. I will be there and hopefully we can set up a meet up.

Well, my wife and I have really gotten into Tenjo Tenghe recently.... the anime, that is. The manga looks cool, but since CMX edited out some of the nudity and other "objectional parts", I'm joining most of the rest of the manga community in boycotting it. Seriously, why anyone would liscence THAT series and then edit it down so it gets a "T" rating is beyond me. It's target audience was pretty obviously in the "OT" crowd.

I like a good Anime. Cant say im a hardcore fan or anything, but i find it enjoyable.
I liked Ghost in the Shell, Armitage III or Sky Blue.
Akira, not so much, even though the universe they came up with was pretty cool.
Downloading Appleseed as we speak. :)

I'm thinking about getting a little into anime, but my experience with it is very limited ie. a couple of games in that style, Akira and all the bad, brainless anime like Dragonball Z, Pokemon etc.

I'd like something that's atleast semi-intelligent. Any surgestions?

Well, my dad used to think anime is all about porn and sensless violence. If Sky Blue (aka Wonderful Days) convinced him otherwise, you should find it enjoyable :)

Ghost in the Shell is a nice classic too.

Oh geez, anime that I like. That's a long list. Neon Genesis Evangelion would probably be good to get into right now, what with it being rereleased now. Um, GTO is pretty good. Hellsing, that's good. Chrono Crusade is good. Wandaba Style is very funny. I enjoyed Excel Saga. Steel Angel Kurumi was good. Rurouni Kenshin of course, and the Samurai X OVAs. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is good. I liked pretty much all of the Gundams except for G Gundam, Vision of Escaflowne was enjoyable. I like Inuyasha. Saiyuki's pretty good. E's Otherwise was interesting. And Jin Roh was a very good movie. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I have to admit, I've thought about a couple of choices since last I was in my comic shop (the only place I know, that sells anime), and I'm thinking about getting some Cowboy Beebop, Ghost in the Shell, Trigun, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Sky Blue.

Whenever I have the money that is.

Samurai Champloo is a great show thus far. Some of the plots are kinda old, but the characters still put an amusing spin on them. It's pretty much a given that if you liked Cowboy Beebop, you'd like this one.
Bleach is also pretty sweet, thus far. You're going to have to get the torrent at the moment, but since the manga is already liscenced, it's only a matter of time till the anime makes it's way over here.

The thing that's great about Anime is that there is always somthing different. It's not all mindless action shows filled with sex and voilence. There's Anime that'll make you laugh, cry and just have a good time.

Pretty much everything that Hayao Miyazaki has done has been great. Some are more overraited then others, but there all worth a watch. I LOVED Kiki's Delivary Service and Nasicaa was awesome. I need to pick up Porco Rosso soon, it looked really good.

The thing that's great is that DISNEY is in charge of those movies so when your paying the 30 clams (US) for the DVD your getting your money's worth. They put a great English Dubb cast so it's worth watching in both languages.

The next movie "Howl's Moving Castle" is getting a limited release this month. So when it comes out in New York City, I'm taking the day off and hitting the train and going to see it. It looks great.

Lets see....most of my favorites have been listed here but here we go. (in no particular order of course)

Tekkaman Blade, Full Metal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, G Gundam Gundam 0083, Gundam: The 08th MS Team, Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X, Samurai Champloo, Outlaw Star, Ghost In The Shell (both the movie & Stand Alone Complex), Akira, Dragonball (the original!!!), Macross/Robotech, Macross Plus, Neon Genesis Evangelion, *shifty eyes* Chobits, Ronin Warriors (yeeah old school baby!), Wolf's Rain, Inuyasha, and of course Yu Yu Hakusho.

Whew.....so other than favorite animes, what about the music? Personally I'm a huge fan of a lot of the music (the instrumentals are amazing), anybody else? Also, nice to see so many anime fans playing a superhero game.....we should make an all anime SG even :D :D

The manga and the anime are very different. There's this whole sci-fi alternate dimension plot in the anime that's nowhere in the manga. And the entire relationship story of the anime is covered in like, the first two volumes of the manga. (Out of 6 total). Good, yes, but not the best animation. I loved the character concepts though, but a little too much fan-service for my tastes. If you get it, I'd recommend getting the 4 volume box set, as that will save you alot of money since it's about the same price as about 2 and a half regular volumes of anime.

Samurai Champloo seems to be good, but haven't seen enough to say for sure. Outlaw Star I higly recomend, get the boxed set for the series, the uncut version is better and explains some stuff. The Ghost in the Shell movie is good, but is a bit overrated, I liked the series better.

hmm first anime i ever saw was the first ep of tenchi muyo ova!. Love that series. (really excited about ova3 disc 1 coming out early july). I have seen everything tenchi - but the OVAs are the best in my opinion.

As for the rest...

Gatchaman (i saw it originally as Battle of the Planets as a kid - later saw some of the original and OVA) - info links at my website (http://www.donnyd.com/gatch.shtml) :)
Cowboy Bebop
Blue Seed
Read or Die OVA (not so much the series)
Ghost in the Shell

hmm...that's about it. I tried to watch FLCL, but I only caught 1 ep in the middle of the story and was very very lost. Never much got into Gundam or Akira.

I'm trying Zatch Bell on Cartoon Network - but I'm not really sure...

Hmmm...Good first anime. It really depends on what your friend is into. If they link action stuff, Bebop is a great choice. As I said before almost all of Hayo Mizaki's (SP) films are great for all ages. It's all a matter of finding what type of show your into. Just take a trip to Best Buy or any other store that sells the DVD's. You should find somthing you like.

My favorite all-time Anime is easily Ranma 1/2. Although I really like InuYasha, too. Although Ranma is still my favorite, Rumiko Takahashi has really developed as a writer, and I think InuYasha is really the end result of that.

I first got involved in Anime as a kid, though, when I was a huge Giant Robot fan. I also liked G-Force/Battle of the Planets, but my favorites were always the robots. Most of those shows never made it over here, but I did collect the Shogun Warrior toys, and got to see a few of the episodes of Grandizer and Getter Robo (Starvengers) that were on Force Five. I think Getter Robo is still my favorite, it's just cool that they could make three DIFFERENT robots by combining them in different order.

Of course, as with Esbat, it was the cute Anime girls that attracted me as well. :D Princess/Aggie June was the main reason I watched Battle of the Planets. And about that time there was an American show, which used Japanese Animation, called Galaxy Rangers. I had a huge crush on Niko, who was the butt-kicking psychic on the team with waist-length brown hair. (To this day, one of my rating systems for Anime is its "hair action" :D)

I think it was probably Sailor Moon that got me back into Anime, although I never watched it the first time it ran. I distinctly remember seeing a commertial for it, though, seeing the artwork, and going, "that's gorgeous, I'm going to have to see it." I was never able to catch the show, though, and so it was the video by Matthew Sweet, "I've Been Waiting", that featured Lum from Urusei Yatsura, that actually got me my first Anime. I was in a store and saw her on the cover of the video tape, and picked it up.

Ranma 1/2, then, was the second Anime video I actually bought, (because it was also by Rumiko Takahashi) and from then on I was hooked. I also went back and bought some old Force Five tapes, so I was able to see those old giant robot movies again. Sci-Fi Channel had an Anime block for a while, and then, of course, Cartoon Network started showing Anime. I've pretty much been following everything they've aired on Adult Swim.

One other series I should mention is Monster Rancher, which I had gotten interested in because of the game. I'm a huge fan of the game, and when the show came out, I was very impressed, since the storylines were a lot more adult than the Pokemon and other similar shows. It only lasted two seasons, but it was definately among my favorites. Another HUGE favorite was Reboot, which although it is not an Anime, is related, to me, because it aired on Toonami.

My top ten list of favorite Animes would probably be as follows:

1) Ranma 1/2
2) Tenchi Muyo
3) Outlaw Star
4) Monster Rancher
5) The Big O
6) InuYasha
7) Read or Die
8) Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
9) Full Metal Alchemist
10) Irresponsible Captain Tylor

If I include Galaxy Rangers and Reboot, they will probably be #2 and #1, respectively. I did not like the GITS movie, it wasn't enough like Shirow's original artwork. The TV show, however, was a lot closer to the original, so I loved it. Cowboy Bebop is actually pretty high on my list, but I liked Outlaw Star better, and for a long time I didn't like Cowboy Bebop because I didn't think it was as good. Finally I came to enjoy it on its own right, though.

Also, I absolutely ADORE Yumiko Readman of Read or Die, and another Anime that I will probably be soon adding to this list stars another mousy little girl with glasses, Xenosaga. I love the storyline of the game, and the Anime is nothing but the storyline of the game, so I know I'm going to love the Anime.

I'm looking for a series to buy on DVD, but I'm stumped as to what to buy. I have pretty much all my favs already. I want a Wolfs Rain set, but a set hasn't come out yet (and I'd rather wait a year for MegaCon to get the whole set for $40, they had it this year, but I like dubs).

I have the whole Outlaw Star set, all of Trigun, and all of FLCL. I was seriously considering getting the Invader Zim boxed set (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00069A6WC/qid=1118201820/sr=8-2/ref=pd_csp_2/104-8898025-1325562?v=glance&s=dvd&n=507846), but thats a lot of clams.

My mom is adamantly against anything that's animated in any way, insisting that if it's not live-action it's for children. However, I got her to watch Spirited Away (Miyazaki, of course) and she admitted that maybe some cartoons were legitimate. Maybe. Later I got her to watch the Bebop movie, and she finally broke down and admitted that, yes, animated shows could be just as good--if not better than live action. So, that might work for you too.

Zim's not an anime, but it's one bad ass cartoon, I got the whole thing with the box. The extra disk is lame. It's got the Christmas episode with different music and interviews with the guy who did the music, no interviews with Johnnen.

And Howl's Moving Castle IS coming out this Friday in LIMITED release. I heard some number of 100 theaters in the US..yippie! I'm just glad I live on Long Island, I can just hop on the LIRR and go into New York City to see it, because they almost always play the small run movies like that. Just getting tickets is going to be fun.

Ok, earlier in the thread i said im downloading Appleseed.
Turned out there are two Appleseed movies, so i downloaded both. :p

One is old, like from 80ies or very early 90ies. Id say its comparable to Transformers: The Movie. It touches some important subjects like the meaning of life and search for happiness, but it doesnt go deep enough, in my opinion.
The action is cheesy for today, but overall, if you take it with a grain of salt, its an interesting watch.

The other, "Appleseed 2004", came out, obviously, in 2004 :)
Its 70% stylized computer graphics and 30% drawings. The action is pretty neat and the art direction looks very impressive, but it really seems like a rambo type of flick. There is alot of "drama", but half of the conversations seem to be excouses to feed the viewer with information, as opposed to something that's actually pleasnt to watch. You could say its the bizarro version of the original Appleseed, because the peaceful parts are cheesy and lame, while the action is awesome.

Overall, id say the old Appleseed is better, so if you dont mind the old school drawing style, id suggest you pick this one over the new one. Assuming you ever have to pick between them.
Because i guess there are better choices out there...

Yes, that show is hillarious. I loved the end of that skit, "My god, these Japanese cartoons are weird!" I can't wait for the DVD. I saw an interview with two of the creators and they said they have to hold back on some of the skits for the Cartoon Network censors to air them.

BTW, if you did miss Sunday's episode it will be on tonight, so don't miss it if you already did!
