Wow, so only 2 new powers for I5 (well, 4, but really only 2 "flair" powers, sonic and archery). No skills. No flashback. No nothing. The new zone, some new foes... I5 suddenly sounds kinda weak. :|

Agreed. Sure, we already knew that the skills system won't be in issue #4. But to only introduce 4 new power sets is kinda weak. I was hoping for Tanker Shields and/or Scrapper Pistols, too.
Well, no news about the Portal Corp. Teleportation Service.
Have to see when the issue lands on the test serrvers. If it is around the CoV beta, and the issue itself doesn't drag me along, I might pause playing and paying CoH........until some really new stuff is introduced.

I seem to be getting the impression that those comics are for Euro versions of the game only. If anyone who has it can get me a URL I't would be great, I'm one of those people in the States that never got a comic from them. :grr:

I5 was weak? Compare it to I4, what'd we get? Costumes and an Arena, anyone been to the Arena lately and seen it packed as it was on test? Ok then.
But free is free. If I had to shell out $20 extra for it, then I'd complain.
I wonder, if from the sound of the CoV archetypes, if Blasters will get some defender or controller primaries in their secondaries, some ranged buff/debuffs or something, as opposed to tanker secondaries, cause those made so much sense. :P

You kids are spoiled!
Back in my days, they would have taken all these updates together and sold them for another 40$ as an expantion pack!
Seriously, look back at other games and think what youre saying. They hardly get changes that are anywhere near as tangible as here.

I was hoping for Tanker Shields and/or Scrapper Pistols, too.
You of all people should know that Pistols wont be in for a VERY long time. Hell, they haven't even started on the powerset yet, so why would it be in I5? :p
I know a lot of people looking forward to Quarter Staff set, though.
Lets do a quick run-through of the article:
- 4 new powersets, Sonics and Archery Prim/Sec for Blasters and Defenders.
- Nerf farming for powergamers...which are probably the biggest group of people who play this game.
- "After actually playing my own game for once, I've found that Blasters really *are* underpowered...It only took me what, 9 months?"
- Nerf Tanker Defense. (But not offense...ironic, no? Might as well get rid of Scrappers all together as well)
- Nerf Regen, and Invuln--again. Apparently, they're not weak enough yet.
- Oh look at that, no skills in the forseeable future. YOU'RE THE LEAD DESIGNER, JACK, HOW THE HELL DID YOU COME UP WITH TWO UNFUN SYSTEMS?
- Despite I-4's retardedly late release, I-5's plans are unchanged
- In the pipeline for Issue 6 and 7: "Making the game absolutely NO fun at all for powergamers AND casual players. And secondly, to ensure that our subscriber numbers keep steadily dropping. Because after all, it's better to have steady subscribers than not. Who cares whether they're increasing or decreasing, right?"

Poor Charon. :( Ugh. Now we have to wait ANOTHER issue for staves, shields, and whatever else was promised.

"I5 is kinda weak" was of course relatively speaking, sorry about that.
I am fully aware of the issues being free expansions and all that.
And I don't count I4 as one, to be honest. The Arena had nothing for me and the costumes were cool, but too little to be considered revolutionary.
So I5 sounds weak compared to I1-3.

Why is there so much bloody focus on archetype balance? Statesman seriously needs to get a grip and focus his time elsewhere - the game balance as we know it isn't really that big of a deal. For the most part - the archetypes do follow their roles. And if the rookie MMORPG team can't fix them after a years worth or balancing - it's time to stop with the blind "megachanges" whenever Statesman gets an idea into his head.
What is an issue is that there's nothing to do in this game but fight and design costumes. Absolutely no focus has been placed on the community - and community tools are none-existant. (Cryptic don't even have a webkit for fansites O_o) The things players actually want - Skills, Bases, et cetera, are pushed back.
I mean what would you rather have? Balanced archetypes or new stuff?

As much as I dislike that the only new powers/archetypes so far are available to level 50s and over, I agree with it for this archetype. Any Kheldian is supposed to be somewhat wiser than the average player.
Someone who's gotten to 50, powerlevelled or not, HAS to have some kind of clue as to what's going on, and on average, most Kheldians I've met do have their act together, so it does give better immersion than NOOB115 with a back story of 'IM AN ELIEN WTF???!!!' all over. I could do without the exploding every time I hop off the Tram though.
But I do concur that they are spending way too much time on overbalancing. But considering the fact that they don't have content to keep us occupied other than combat, it almost makes sense. If everyone can get to 50 in a couple of months, then they all get bored and leave. Make it so it's tougher and folks stay longer.
I don't like it but from a business stand point it makes sense. Also, new powers and archetypes can unbalance things even further, so that explains the lack those, skills included. But it doesn't explain why we can't get new emotes that NPCs already do in the game. That just makes no sense to me.
Along with new costumes, or even a weapon customizer at the guns and ammo shop. How many people have modded the textures already? Just make a variety of gun/sword/axe/mace/etc textures, and a person can go to this play, pay 1 mill influence, and swap out their gun.
How about a place call The Buff Diner, put it in the higher level zones where folks do street sweeping, put an endurance buffing crystal in the place and defenders and controllers can hang out there buffing and healing those that come by.
And give the ladies some decent sit down options!

What is an issue is that there's nothing to do in this game but fight and design costumes.
And that is an issue, a HUGE one at that. Once you've gone through the game and reached level 50, there is NOTHING left for you to do. And when you roll an alt, guess what? It's the EXACT same thing you did before. Run around killing x villain group. It's boring, and monotonous, and makes me wonder what the hell Statesman thinks is "fun". Would it have killed them to not worry about balance so much, and just focus on fun additions to the game, like new mission types? I want to see a mission where, when looking for someone, I don't have fight through dozens of enemies which make no sense of being there other than filler.
Make it so it's tougher and folks stay longer.
Or they will leave...it's a double-edged sword.
I really don't think that would keep people staying longer. This will hurt the casual gamers, who don't have any 50s, and it will hurt the powergamers who have nothing left to do.
IMO, they're running this game straight into the ground. The CoV Dev team, on the other hand, actually seems competent.

And it might sounds funny, but back during beta/at launch, I never felt this game was unbalanced. The biggest worry we had then were fire tankers, hoody hoo. By now it sounds as if everything and everyone was unbalanced.
But if you think about it, there are 2 factors that allow for an accellerated rate of the min/maxers finding the min/max archetypes. Respecs and the test server.
In beta, folks were bumped artificially in levels, and they already had their powersets picked, did anyone do a perma-unstoppable build back in Beta? Could it be done when the cap was 40 and you didn't get the power until 38? Or Perma-MoG?
When the test server and respecs came out, suddenly all these min maxers could try all the combinations they could think of to make an unbalanced character.
And now it's too late to change hasten enough to stop this, so they change everything else.
If they made Hasten just affect recharge on attack powers instead of all powers, then it would fulfil it's purpose and not allow perma builds, but instead they nerf everything else around Hasten.
Meanwhile the overpowered sets get all the attention and the gimped sets are left to waddle around waiting for the devs to 'get to them'.
I know, I'm starting to sound like a DOOM post, but it just points out they can spend all the time in the world on balance, with almost 200K people you will never achieve it. So give me my cell phone emote!

We wait months for our issues and we get like 3 new content?! Xan's right, I could give a sh!t less about balancing. The game is playable, each archetype does their part for the most part. I thought I4 was the worst issue yet. After two matches in the arena I think Im done unless we have some SG matches I can make. I didnt like the new costume options, so really when the issue came out Im doing the same thing I was doing befor it came out.
And what other MMO's do you pay for the updates? If I had to pay for updates in CoH Id be long gone, its not like they are doing us a favor, we still pay 15 bucks a month.

Complain all you like... the prospect of getting usable secondaries has me thrilled. That being said, I would'nt mind seeing Hami swapped out for.. I dunno, MegaMech or the like. One thing I always felt CoH could use is some more distinctive, time -specific souviners. (not the ones you get from plot arcs... just using the term). I mean, we have badges for the Halloween and Winter events, and thus exclusive titles, but a costume option might be nice. And if the rotate out the "big challenge" on a yearly basis, the much praised/damned HO would become something similiar, especially depending on what it was replaced with.
And you pay for updates in EQ, DAOC, SWG, and FFXI, off the top of my head.

/em golfclap
I'd say Blasters still need a little bit of help but other than that, you're right. Cease with the incessant overbalancing and make with the new stuff you promised us back in beta!
I take exception to Cryptic's decision to only release additions to the game during Issues. But as long as they're going to do that, they need to get on the ball with actually start releasing new stuff. At a minimum, every Issue should include:
* New emotes
* New missions/storyarcs
* New community or supergroup tools
* New costume options (seriously, how hard can it be to at least come up with a few new Chest Symbols?)
I'm willing to grant them extra time to create new zones and powersets, but that doesn't mean they should put them off for too long (maybe once every other Issue or so).
But no. What do they end up spending most of their time on? "We're going to nerf Regeneration and travel powers," and, "We need to spend an additional two weeks testing Dark powersets in PvP."
/em groan
^-- (Hey there's an idea for a new emote right there? How about it, Cryptic? Guys? Hello?)
If Cryptic keeps going in this "lets get the ATs balanced" direction, and keeps giving us ****ty updates, there's going to be no more CoH. There have been things we've been asking for since Beta that have yet to be implemented, and I haven't heard a word about more chest symbols/patterns/more customization. There are TONS of 'costume threads' over on that main forum with literally 100s of pages. I don't think they're paying attention to that. There are also numerous people whipping up such unique and thought out power sets, but we're given 4 when we were promised so many more awhile ago.
I'm seriously tired of this. I Arena-ed myself out on Test server. I go in once a while to find one event listed, and no one ever else comes it. It's a useless feature added to the game for only a small population of CoH. Things better start shaping up real quick over there. I'm tired of these lame issues. Free or not, they know they can do better. We've seen it done. Like Xan said, States needs to get his head out of the toilet and focus on something else other than balancing because they will NEVER be balanced to the point where they satisfy everyone. Somone will ALWAYS complain.

What really saddens me is that most of the costume stuff we want is on "the backburner", it's not coming anytime soon. If you ever look over there priority list thats where things like new costume options and most new power sets are. I'm glad they finally added some new costume options with the last update, but it wasn't big and great like most expected. I'm also glad Sonics and Archery is coming finally, that may hold some of us wanting something new over for awhile.

This makes me recall my experience with other MMOs. Let's take the uber classic MMO Everquest, they try for 3 expansions a year, you have to pay for them, so ok, grant them that. I believe almost every expansion has 4 things.
New Zone, New Clothing, New Missions, New Spells
Sometimes they throw in a new Race, sometimes they throw in a higher level cap, or things like a bazaar, etc.
Now, maybe if that's the only one I'd play, it would be an unfair comparison, so let's take another, Asheron's Call, every month there is a free update, in almost each update has the following things:
New Missions, New Clothing.
Occasionally there are new spells and/or weapons as well.
Keeping in mind both of these staples of the MMOs have crafting systems, and implementing new clothing means balancing that in the crafting systems.
COH was crippled during initial game design, and the devs have been fighting it ever since.
IF the original game had come out as designed, there would have been terrible balance issues, but there would have been insane content we don't see. Just to hint at this, Gadgeteers could use batteries to help curb their endurance drain.
This factors in an item system that can be applied to the powers. They shelved all of that, dumbed the entire system way down, now they're trying to smarten it back up, but it seems like they keep hitting a brick wall.
I'm hoping, once CoV releases, things will progress much quicker.
I know they say there are 2 design teams, but I seriously doubt there are devs that aren't touching CoV and are just sitting there working on CoH. The two systems have to mesh, everything has to jive.
I think once CoV is released and established, both teams can focus on the future of the game. I also think CoV will create an outcry to push the CoH team to come out with more faster.
I mean look at the awesome costume options we've just had a glimpse of, there will be a ton of posting how this is what they wanted for their hero since day 1, and how come I have to shell out another $50 and $5 a month and wait for the bad guy turns good task force for it to happen?
CoV launching should light a fire under the CoH dev team's arse, competition speeds progress, and that's really what it will be is a competition.

*Drunken with anger rant I apologize ahead of time*
I'm starting to get tired of his “Vision” that carrot he is dangling is getting duller and duller Personally I am getting sick and tired of the devs Nerfing ATs in there unachievable balance quest of halfassness.
I wish for once they would stop screwing many people over and actually focus on the "Fun Factor" of the game I have been here since beta I have 3 50s, I am bored to death of the Flipping grind. And ill admit I am a fanboi of this game I have the damned cardboard standup. But im losing my fanboi feeling and slowly realizing this is starting to suck
- Nerf tanks: WHY!?! What they can efficiently kill stuff in 35+ range is that a reason to Cut them down?
-Nerf scrappers: hes just doing it for fun now an example SR in the begining sucked they took two months reviewed it in high detail, and made changes accordingly then SR it didnt make you a super tank but you lived to see another fight. But to statesman this was still gimped however even tho he claimed it was gimped he Nerfed elude (in manys opinion the only power that kept a SR alive in late game) to where were almost as bad as DA...poor DA. So if he is nerfing powersets he thinks gimped I only fear for the ones he thinks are uber
- Nerf farming: Why is my way of playing not good? why am I the bad guy if I want to max my experience because I went though your "Content"(which to them is the same mission different skin) X times and am bored to death with it? Why is my fun, my money, not good enough where you have to make my enjoyment harder that isn't fun, that just ****ing sucks?
- Skills. Where are they? They’ve been promised since what issue two and im cautious of Statesman’s idea of fun "we scrapped two models because they weren't fun". Well sure as hell making any AT or power that sticks out and is "Fun" to use must be watered down to his level of "Fun" which some will agree His fun is no fun when he goes on his "I have a idea" I want something other than the grind This is my big hope but my hope is fading
- Guiding the NPC: (If they are implementing this). Im sorry but Guiding NPCs suck because 90% of the time they are ignorant (remember the Stairmaster in KR) I don't know anyone who actually likes guiding NPCs around especially when they are in the heat of combat. Real winner there
- The flash back system: He is not sure because he is debating on weather people should have old characters do stuff they missed. Um excuse me I Want to live the moments I missed why is that a debatable thing that might actually be "fun" I want my main who was created and thought of way before these things were around to be able to experience these. I create dozens of alts I’m a official altoholic with my two accounts, but I want some moments for my Main that he missed its like telling superman after he killed doomsday that he cant arrest a thug robbing a bank because he is too powerful.
I apologize for this rant of DOOM I love this game with every fiber of my being but now its becoming work and if I want to work ill get paid for it.

The arena was a huge mistake, IMHO. This has caused the over balancing of all the ATs. Now, this would have to have been done with CoV coming out, but it could have been done at a much more casual pace. Which would have allowed the Devs to get that damned SSOCS working, or my damned shapeshifting set. It seems like since they went away from the original system they've been play catch-up. I honestly feel if he had it to do over again Statesman would scrap the system we're using now in favor of SOMETHING else.

Customized costume options would be nice, especially if they could be connected with certain superpowers. Buy some Battletech-style launchers on your shoulders and have your M30 Grenade launch out of those instead of your Super Soaker. Have your X-Ray Beam come out of your gauntlet or the gem in your chest instead of your eyes (options which would work better with Naturals). When they're not being used, maybe the swords, axes, maces and assault rifles could be stowed or "stuck" across the Hero's back like in WoW (as seen in the Leeroy video) instead of fading out of existence. And if anyone sees the need for it, add a large, teched-out headband for Natural and Technology Mind Controllers. That sort of thing.
And give the ladies some decent sit down options!

It's the same dev team for both. As far as I'm aware the dev team also handle Lineage and Guild Wars. I might be wrong though - it might just be that all of Cryptic's game's have the same QA people, but different developers.
Incidently - this is the first time the CohGuru community has all been in agreeance with it's complaining. *shudder* The end is nigh.
Pet Peeve:
What I don't understand is that there are amateur modders out there (check a skin/mod site for your fave shooter or strategy game and you'll understand what i mean - heck check out the sims 2 :) ) who are able to dish out more costume options/etc than the CoH dev team - who are professional's in their field. If the dev team were truely dedicated to CoH, and not split among other games, than we might see new stuff in between updates.
I'm not criticising what they have - what they've made is excellant - but the costume options should be SIMPLE to add to. As has been proven by amateur modders doing so.

The problem is, the modders don't provide new models but only new skins for existing models. If the community could add weapon models (cleaver instead of a huge battle axe) this would look totally different.
But to add a new model is not that easy cuase you would have to code also the different animations for this specific model. That is why skinning is much easier (and this way it would be pretty easy to, at least, make power blasts or so customizable by being able to change their color)

Some of you might remember that many of us suggested making new emblems/skins for the game back during beta. Aura responded to it then and explained that it has to do with internet copyright laws somehow, that they are not allowed to use contant made by players (though I still don't understand why). If they said custom skins, which you can send in for verification before they go live, I'd be on it like Esbat over Jigglies.
It makes no sense. We've been playing for a year and a month, and the only new chest symbol we've gotten was a maple leaf. Congratulations dev team. It took 8 months for you to come up with the graphic of a maple leaf. Half of the chest symbols are awful in their own way. I only use about two of them altogether. We need more costume customization. I would love to have one arm green, the other red, my shoes a different color, etc. And patterns. How long have we been asking for more patterns? Granted the costumes in I4 were fantastic, but they definitely didn't cater to everyone's liking. I4 was shameful. We got something that is completely useless and hardly anyone ever uses that damned Arena. So much time and effort was put into that while power sets were, once again, set aside.
I hope they get a damn clue soon.

Intel Inside swaps the AR model, he doesn't just skin the existing one. Check his thread and see, he has swapped out the super soaker for about four of the more sleek looking guns in game. If he can allow that option, Cryptic could allow that and alot more.

Thanks for the heads up on the whole NCSoft/Cryptic thing Poison - I wasn't 100% sure on that. In regards to the comments I made abotu amateur modders - I wasn't implying Cryptic should take their commission. I was merely suggesting that if amateurs can do it so fast - then why can't the industry professionals.
Oh and regarding the maple leaf. It took damn near the entire board posting on an official thread to get it. When they finnaly added it the thead was up to like 3000 posts. I'll let ou guess how many were dev posts.
I really like the arena - one of the best things in game for me. But I can't deny the fact that it was aimed towards the wrong fanbase. (As is evident by the fact no-one uses it.)

That's downright pathetic. This is an MMO that started from scratch - from inside of a man's mind, and that was on the top of things for well over three months when it was released. The number one MMO to be playing during the summer of 2004. All of this hard work and effort, and then it seems like they stopped, and this gives the exact evidence I was looking for to prove my point. It shouldn't take 3000 posts nor a thread to get newer chest symbols, or patterns for that matter. Some patterns are just atrocious. There are some that I will never, ever use in the creator.
We have requested for more hats. We've requested for the option of amulets. Jewelry. A variety of belts. More boot options. More glove options. More hairstyles. More color customization. More patterns. More chest symbols. There have even been numerous requests to make some designs/patterns look realistic then what they currently are. Will we ever see them? At this rate, never. Will we ever see newer high level game content? Never. Will Statesman EVER learn to shut his mouth and keep to himself without exciting the entire fanbase? Absolutely not. He just keeps at it like there is nothing wrong.
States: :sarcasm: You're slackin', buddy. You're slackin'. And it's gonna hurt in the long run. Crash and burn.

Has anyone even thought to consider that maybe, just maybe, this is the start of releasing a few powersets per issue? Would you rather want 20 powersets (2 primary/2 secondary per AT) all at once and then nothing for a year, or would you want a few each issue?

And how about something as small as being able to change the stinkin' eye color?? :grr:
But.... sonics and archery?? YAY! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v610/Tsarmiina/smilies/clapsmilie.gif

I've already made heroes though. I don't want to make new ones. I want to do something different with the ones i've got.

Hm. We've had the same sets since Beta. No new additions, no nothing. We've managed to test, experience, and play with them for a year and a month now. I think releasing another 20 wouldn't hurt.

Plus, I imagine there are a good many people playing CoH who are yet to be able to make their ideal hero because the powersets have not been available.

It would hurt. Badly.
First, the concept needs to be come up with
then tested graphics to find if it would work
Adding them to the game in closed to find what they should do, and tweak them
Find their spot and power (DOT, Slow, KB, Debuff)
Test them again.
It takes alot of time and energy to make a entirely new powerset, 20 is a whole lot more.

1 new power set an issue or 2 every other issue would be just fine and dandy, altho this just might only aggrivate the "balanced gameplay" issue even more than it is now.
I want new costumes at least every two issues. Its an RPG and we need costumes to freakin' RP.
Custom weapons/power fx would be a WELCOME addition to any of the next two issues, some of us don't want to look like the Jolly Green Giant every time they flick on Instant Healing and Intergration, I want purple force lightning instead of classic blue elec attacks and I want fricken white, non-blue ice.
CoV promises more destructible environs due to its new physics engine, so that will make Villain gameplay a bit more unique, so what are they going to do that is comparable to that for CoH?
Also, since Epic ATs are promised shortly after the release of CoV, I also expect some freakin' VEHICLES. I was promised vehicles and I want my vehicles. Some natural / mutant / magic /science / tech heroes can't SS / SJ / Fly / or TP so I WANT MY ESBICYCLE or my DOGMOBILE dammit!

(Sorry, I love playing this game, and so far, none of the changes from the updates are as bad as everyone makes them out to be from my point of view, nor have they negitavily affected my game play. Thus, I refuse to say anything negative about this update.)

Read everything I wrote just after the game was released and it's still the same today.
Everything suggested then is still missing today.

I quite agree. I have been playing CoH since June of last year and have loved every bit of it. The changes I have seen have not been detrimental to my characters except for the first couple times playing after the changes. In fact, sometimes it has made game play more enjoyable because I am learning different ways of combat due to change. I RSK'd Hot for Teacher yesterday with Rottweiler and Moon Jump's Vir Megator and had a great time, even though I didn't have my fire imps, RA, or some of my better holds. Change is part of life: accept that and things will be much more enjoyable.

Well interest for me is waning since I've been with CoH since March of 2002.
The Devs removing all souvenirs from TFs is finally shutting my door.
Instead of adding stuff, they seem intent on removing stuff.

Good stuff. I really agree with the statement about the glowing eyes, and how you can pick no other facial expression for it. That should have been fixed long ago. God forbid I want glowing eyes and a smiling face.

Well, actually you CAN have glowing eyes with any kind of face now, but you have to wait for 30 for it. Never mind that I've wanted to have an AURA since day 1... :D
I think the best thing is the confirmation that BOTH Archery and Sonics are for Blasters and Defenders. Makes me wonder what the Sonic Buff/Debuff will be like...

Disorients, sleeps, and holds. Disorient - loud burst of sonics, sleep - soft sonics, holds - sonics so loud you just have to plug you ears. Think Banshee and Syrn.

Actually, if you put it that way, it's almost like Sonics should be a Primary for Blasters, and then a Secondary for Controllers...
I'm sure they'll experiment with the ideas, though. (Some of the powers in Trick Arrow suggest that it was originally designed as a Blaster Secondary, and gradually became more and more Defender-like)

Well, the sonic Buff/Debuff set could be a Con Secondary. (And Def Primary)
At least that would add something to Cons. (No melee love, though,...nerfing tanks, many scrappers...MAYBE give a boost to DA...but don't get your hopes up...)
Sigh...at least with CoV Beta, I won't really be playing CoH much, anyways...so maybe I6 will be better...
